New Boston climber injured in fall at Crawford Notch

CONCORD - A New Boston man was severely injured Saturday after falling 70 feet while climbing Frankenstein Cliffs in Crawford Notch State Park.

Eric Scoville, 55, was climbing solo and unroped about 2:30 p.m. Saturday on the Standard Route at Frankenstein Cliffs. According to New Hampshire Fish and Game, he was near the top of an ice bulge on the first pitch, about 70 feet above ground, when he fell with no rope or protection to break his fall.

Multiple climbers were nearby, including Zebulon Jakub, a guide from the International Mountain Climbing School and member of the Mountain Rescue Service. The climbers assessed Scoville's injuries, called for help, placed the injured hiker on a litter, and then carried him about a half-mile to the Arethusa Falls parking area where he was transported by Bartlett/Jackson ambulance to Memorial Hospital in North Conway.

Scoville was later taken by DHART helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for treatment. He was listed in fair condition Monday morning.
