Daniel Carr scored in the first period and added another goal in the third as Union upended Dartmouth, 4-1, on Friday night in the opener of a best-of-three ECAC quarterfinal series at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y. Game 2 is set for tonight at 7.
The Big Green's Tyler Sikura scored at 15:12 of the second period to tie the game at 1 before Union's Daniel Ciampini answered 2:47 later for the eventual game-winning goal.
Freshman goalie Charles Grant made 37 saves for fifth-seeded Dartmouth (15-13-5). Troy Grosenick finished with 31 for the fourth-seeded Dutchmen (18-12-5).
Women's basketball
Stonehill 78, Franklin Pierce 66 (NCAA): The Franklin Pierce women's basketball team led by eight points at the half but couldn't sustain its momentum and dropped a decision to Stonehill on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Regional in Waltham, Mass.
Windham's Amanda Saab, playing in her final game, tallied a career-best 24 points and added eight rebounds for the Ravens, who finished 18-11.
Mary Louise Dixon scored a game-high 32 points for Stonehill, which scored 11 of the second half's first 13 points to turn the game around.
Bentley 68, LIU Post 57: Manchester's Christiana Bakolas registered eight points, six assists, six steals and five rebounds to help top-seeded Bentley past eighth-seeded LIU Post in an NCAA Division II East Regional quarterfinal on Friday night in Waltham. Souhegan of Amherst product Jane White added six points for the Falcons (29-1 overall).
Softball
Keene State 8, Bowdoin 4; Salve Regina 3, Keene State 2: Greenland's Mariah Crisp fanned 12 as the Owls prevailed in the doubleheader opener in Clermont, Fla. Meryl Ragaini cracked a three-run homer. Londonderry's Samantha Nitso and Salem's Stephanie Long each had two hits for KSC. Later, the Owls bowed to Salve Regina to drop to 3-5.
Baseball
Daniel Webster 5, Becker 4: Pelham's Joe Morin cracked a tie-breaking double to lift the Eagles to 6-2 overall, 3-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Zack Hurley of Hudson earned the win, tossing five innings of three-run ball. Stratham's Greg Dubela hurled the final four innings to earn the save.
Suffolk 15, Keene State 12: Freshman Billy Hartmann of Greenland had three hits and scored four runs, and senior Greg Bates of Salem cracked a three-run homer for the Owls, who dropped to 5-9 with the loss in Leesburg, Fla.?Women's lacrosse
Connecticut College 8, Keene State 5: Senior Lauren Brown scored a pair of goals in the loss for the host Owls (1-4).
