Hill write-ins prompt draw for elected positions

HILL – There were initially no contested races this year in town, but write-ins forced a future "draws" to see who wins.
In elections Tuesday, Mark Dow won reelection to the board of selectmen with 59 votes.
Michael Mahurin won one of four open seats for three years on the budget committee with 69 votes. But there were eight write-ins for the positions, and five of them ended up tied with two votes each, forcing a draw to pick three winners.
For two two-year seats on the budget committee, there were no filed candidates, but write-in candidate Gerry Weinart was elected to one seat with two write-in votes, and 11 other write-in candidates tied with one vote each. There will be a draw to pick one of the 11 to fill the second seat.
The library trustee position was also open on the ballot, but five write-in candidates tied with one vote each, and a draw will decide the seat.
