Uneventful Elections in Durham

DURHAM - Turnout was low and elections were uneventful at Oyster River High School on Tuesday.

Wayne Burton, Carden Welsh and Jay Gooze all earned seats on the town council with 666 votes, 625 votes and 673 votes respectively.

A referendum warrant article on wastewater treatment plant sludge dewatering equipment requiring a 2/3 majority to pass did so without problem, with 632 voting for and 129 against.

Only 877 ballots were cast in the town elections. The town said average turnout for the annual town election is around 1,200.

On the school side, Thomas Newkirk and Kenneth Rotner earned at-large seats on the Oyster River Cooperative School District board made up of Lee, Durham and Madbury, with 1,470 votes and 1,258 votes respectively. Carl Piedmont received 682 votes.

The district's proposed operating budget of $38,815,855 passed by a vote of 1250-782.

Voters also approved a collective bargaining agreement with the Oyster River Education Support Personnel Association; $40,000 to support initiatives requested by the Oyster River Sustainability Committee and a warrant article authorizing the retention of up to 2.5 percent of year-end unassigned general funds.

The total number of votes cast for the Oyster River Cooperative School District was 2,162.
