Taste for chocolate lures many to Goffstown Sunday

GOFFSTOWN -- CHOCOLATE LOVERS united at the Chocolate Lover's Fantasy at the Stonebridge Country Club on Sunday.

The event, in its 21st year, raises money for book scholarships for Goffstown High School students.

Event chairman Pat Henault said the snowstorm that arrived on Friday evening and dumped more than two feet of snow in Goffstown didn't adversely affect the afternoon's festivities.

"In spite of the storm, we did fine," Henault said.

Many items were picked up on Friday before the heaviest snow started, and some establishments that closed Saturday made special deliveries directly to the country club, which opens especially for the club each year.

"We even had restaurants deliver this morning," she said.

Judi Lanza, a member of the Mother's Club for the past 10 years, said people look forward to coming out to support community events like this each year.

"I think it's a mixture of people coming and re-connecting, people like to socialize. And who doesn't love chocolate?" Lanza said.

Chocolate was what brought friends Nicky Noonan, Karen Lassella and Candy Waller, but two of the trio have Goffstown High School students in the family and wanted to support them.

"This is a great community event," Lassella said. "We're happy to support it."

Former New Boston residents Pam Clark and Regina Franklin drove up from Merrimack to get their chocolate fix.

"This is my fifth year coming," Franklin said.

The club recruited volunteers from the Goffstown High School chapter of the National Honor Society, who helped serve desserts and clean up.

"It's exciting to know that there is scholarship money," said Amanda Stowers.

Olivia Odell said working at the event is a win-win for all involved.

"It's fun, we get to help our community and our school, and we get help for college expenses," she said, adding that the students are also exposed to new experiences.

"This is a great way to give back to our community," said Morgyn Soucy.
