This week's Rare Bird Alert
A Townsend's solitaire was found on Washburn Road in Gilford on Jan, 11, and seen again on the 12th, 13th, and 15th.
An immature red-headed woodpecker has been coming to a feeder on Grafton Road in Alexandria since Dec. 13, and was last reported on Jan. 15.
A varied thrush was reported from Quimby Road in Bow on Jan. 12 and 13, but it has not been relocated.
A greater white-fronted goose continues to be seen at the Portsmouth traffic circle with a flock of Canada geese, and at various other Portsmouth locations including North Mill Pond, and in front of Liberty Mutual on Borthwick Avenue. It is always seen with a flock of Canada geese, and was last reported on Jan. 13. A brant was reported from coastal Hampton on Jan. 12.
A male Barrow's goldeneye was seen on the Merrimack River in Manchester on Dec. 30, and has been several times since then. It was most recently reported near 250 Commercial St. on Jan. 16. A male Barrow's goldeneye was seen off of North Hampton State Beach on Jan. 12.
A female canvasback was seen on the Merrimack River from Hall Street in Concord on Jan. 14 and 15, and a northern pintail was seen in South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on Jan. 12.
A thick-billed murre was seen in coastal Rye, and one was seen in Hampton, both on Jan. 12. A dovekie was seen in coastal Rye on the 12th, 13th, and 14th. A black guillemot was seen in Hampton Harbor on July 13. An estimated 50 razorbills were counted along the coast on Jan. 12.
A common black-headed gull was seen on Jan. 14, and two glaucous gulls and two Iceland gulls were seen on the 12th, all at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant.
A common black-headed gull, a glaucous gull, an Iceland gull, and a black-legged kittiwake were seen in the Hampton Harbor area on Jan. 12.
A hoary redpoll was seen in Penacook on Jan. 11, one was seen in Concord on the 15th, and one was seen in Hampton Falls on the 16th.
Common redpoll sightings during the past week included: 50 in Center Ossipee on Jan. 12, 27 in Penacook on the 11th, and three in Ashland on the 14th.
Pine grosbeak sightings during the past week included: 20 in West Lebanon on Jan. 9; five in Manchester on the 16th; 13 in Hanover and eight in Exeter on the 13th.; 11 in North Conway, six in Merrimack, and three in Greenland on the 12th; and five in Concord on the 11th.
Bohemian waxwing sightings during the past week included 40 in Bedford and seven in Hanover on Jan. 16.
A Lapland longspur was seen in coastal Rye on Jan. 13, and one was seen in Penacook on the 11th.
An American pipit was seen in coastal Rye on Jan. 13.
A flock of 70 snow buntings was seen in Lyme on Jan. 10, a flock of 70 was seen in Boscawen on the 10th, and a flock of 45 was seen in Penacook on the 11th.
Seven purple sandpipers, a ruddy turnstone, a black-bellied plover, eight sanderlings, and three dunlin were seen along the coast on Jan. 12.
A merlin was seen in Concord on Jan. 15, and a red-shouldered hawk was reported from Hampstead on Jan. 13.
A turkey vulture was seen in Salem on Jan. 14.
A fish crow was reported from Salem on Jan. 9.
A hermit thrush was seen in Etna on Jan. 12.
