DERRY - In the middle of a cold, dark New England winter, almost nothing tastes better than a bowl of steaming hot, homemade soup.
On Feb. 1, Community Caregivers will host its eighth annual Potter's Bowl fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. at Promises to Keep on Rockingham Road. For a $35 ticket, those attending can pick out a handcrafted pottery bowl donated by a local New Hampshire artist along with a homemade soup donated by local restaurants from the Derry area.
"It is an artistic event full of fun and lots of great food to help support a local nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the elderly and disabled in our area," said Community Caregivers Executive Director Cindee Tanuma.
In addition to the homemade pottery and soup, Tanuma said there will be breads, desserts and takeaway containers of soup available in the last hour of the event.
There will be entertainment throughout the evening, including the Red Star Twirlers, as well as a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction with items donated by New England artists, including oil and acrylic paintings, matted photography, watercolors and handcrafted jewelry. There will also be a pottery wheel demonstration in the hour before the event for those who show up early.
"Tickets are on sale now and sell out quickly," said Tanuma. "To purchase tickets to the event, please call caregivers at 432-0877 or drop by the Derry Masonic Temple at 58 E. Broadway during the business day."
Anyone interested in a soup menu, directions or a list of auction items can visit the website at comcaregivers.org.
Community Caregivers of Greater Derry is a nonprofit serving the elderly and disabled in Derry and six other towns in the region. Although the organization has hundreds of volunteers, Tanuma said there is an increased need during the winter for people to provide rides for the elderly and disabled for things like medical appointments or shopping.
Volunteering for Community Caregivers is an excellent opportunity for people who might have a tight schedule, said Tanuma. Additional information on volunteer opportunities can also be found on the organization's website.
