Born in New Hampshire in 1861, Mudgett earned a medical degree from the University of Michigan before moving to Chicago, where he built a “Murder Castle” with secret passages, gas pipes and soundproof rooms. Opened as a hotel during the Columbian Exposition in 1893, dozens of guests and staff members mysteriously disappeared.
