Residents campaign to save Adams Pond Dam
During the extensive and divided debate over the fate of the dam, several residents who opposed the town takeover stated that they did not necessarily want the dam to disappear, potentially taking Adams Pond with it, but that they were also against the town taking on the expense of the dam.
More than one resident suggested that those who wanted to save the dam should raise the money to buy it from Jean Gagnon.
The issue was initially raised when the state dam bureau deemed the dam as unsafe, and said Gagnon needed to either repair or remove it by 2014.
Gagnon had stated that he did not want to spend the money to repair the dam and would remove it, but the town and Gagnon reached a tentative agreement for the town to take control of a .73-acre parcel of his land that includes the dam.
After the Town Council deadlocked on the vote to take over the property, the motion was defeated.
However, one of the most vocal proponents of saving the dam and the pond, Les Seaboyer, has begun an effort to raise money to preserve them.
"Why save Adams Pond?" he said. "Simply put, it is the correct thing to do morally, ethically and historically."
To show the Town Council that there is popular support to preserve the dam, Seaboyer has helped establish a fund through the town to help save it.
He said those interested in donating should send checks to the town administrator's office at the Derry Municipal Center, 14 Manning St., Derry, 03038.
The memo line of the checks should state that it is for Adams Pond Dam.
"If the town ultimately chooses not to acquire the dam, then all monies will be returned to (donors) as long as (they) have made the correct notation on the memo line of the check," he said.
There has been no official cost quoted for the repair of the dam, although the town public works director has estimated that it could cost up to $200,000.
"(Adams Pond) is a voice saying to all people of this town crying out in the darkness, please, don't let me fade away and die," said Seaboyer.
