Police say they busted ‘Fast and Furious’ car race in Salem
SALEM — Police broke up a New Hampshire version of the movie, “The Fast and Furious,” early Monday morning when a speeding car almost hit a police cruiser head on.
According to a news release, about 2 a.m. police went to Main Street and Pelham Road for a report of about 20 vehicles blocking the intersection and drag racing taking place.
A police cruiser heading to the scene was forced off the road and nearly hit head on by a speeding car being operated without lights.
Other responding officers caught up to that vehicle as it tried to flee down Pleasant Street and into the Track Lot. The car was modified, had only a roll bar and driver’s seat in it and was fitted with wide, slick tires, police said. It had no plates and the registration was revoked.
As other police cruisers arrived, numerous cars began to take off, but police were able to either block or stop several of them and make arrests.
Among those charged were:
Bernardo Nin Del Valle, 22, of Lynn, Mass., reckless conduct and racing on highways. He is free on $1,000 personal recognizance bail.
Surelvi Rivas, 23, of Lynn, reckless conduct. Released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail.
Jefferson Rodriguez, 21, of Chelsea, Mass., reckless conduct. Bail set at $1,000 personal recognizance.
David Torres, 19, of Boston, defective equipment, yellow line violation, safe tires required. Released on a summons.
Anthony Santiago, 24, of Lawrence, Mass., possession of marijuana and open container. Released on a summons.
Leandro Pena, 24, of Boston, reckless conduct, reckless operation, disobeying a police officer, unregistered motor vehicle and misuse of plates. He was released on $500 cash bail.
