GOFFSTOWN — High school students will show how thrift store cast-offs can be turned into fashionable outfits as they partner with the Goffstown Public Library for the “Secondhand Chic” fashion show.

The event, to be held at Goffstown High School today from 7 to 9 p.m., will also feature a jewelry sale to benefit Goffstown High School’s art program, and refreshments will be provided by the school’s culinary club.

The library’s Adult Services Director Sandy Whipple said students from the high school will be models for ensembles they put together themselves, ranging from everyday school wear to prom gowns.

“Part of it will be imparting on them that you don’t have to go to the mall and spend a bazillion dollars to look great,” Whipple said. “It’s a great way to clothe your family on a shoestring budget.”

Whipple said shopping at the Community Clothes Center, located at 9 North Mast Road, is also a good way to reuse and recycle, and that the center stocks plenty of brand name clothing.

“It’s amazing what you can find in there,” she said.

Volunteers at the show will get to keep one outfit, and those attending can bring in a non-perishable food item for the Goffstown Network and be entered into a raffle to win a bag of clothing from the center, valued at $10.

“Ten dollars in this Community Clothing Center can buy you a whole new wardrobe,” said Whipple.

Amy Poisson, director of the Community Clothing Center, said the event will increase community awareness about the center and help the Goffstown Network at the same time.

“There are still people who say they didn’t know we were here, and it’s been three years,” she said. “We want people to know the clothing is there for the whole community — it’s such a good resource.”

Poisson said it is also a good way for a cross-section of organizations in town to work together for a common good, and allow students to have some fun while serving their community.

“It’s definitely a fun community event,” she said, “and it brings awareness about what we have to offer.”
