Conway man charged with attempted murder after shooting
CONWAY – A Conway man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting that injured a Berlin man late Wednesday night.
Eugene W. Menard, 31, of 379 White Mountain Highway, No. 21, was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with attempt to commit murder, a class A felony, and felon in possession of a firearm, a class B felony. The class A charge carries with it penalties of up to life imprisonment, and the class B charge carries a penalty of 7 1/2 to 15 years.
Menard is alleged to have shot William A. Burke, 23, of 147 Church St., Berlin, in the groin. Shortly after midnight on Aug. 30, Conway Police responded to a call from Memorial Hospital emergency room personnel, who reported a white male came into the hospital with a gunshot wound. Burke was transported by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Conway authorities said his injuries were non-life-threatening.
Menard is also being charged with violation of bail and committing crimes while out on bail. Other charges might still be brought forth. The shooting is believed to have occurred in the parking lot of the Conway Shopping Center at 234 White Mountain Highway.
