MANCHESTER — A ground-breaking ceremony is set to be held today for a long-planned fire station on Hackett Hill Road.

The Fire Department is organizing the event, which is expected to be attended by the aldermen, Mayor Ted Gatsas and other city officials.

The public is also invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held at noon on Thursday. The location is across from the current station at 146 Hackett Hill Road. The ground-breaking is the culmination of years-long process to replace the station, which was meant to be temporary when it first opened in 1988 to serve the northwest part of the city. The current facility’s roof is in danger of collapse during heavy snowfalls, and it lacks a generator. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted last month to authorize the city to issue $2.35 million in bonds to build the new station.

The aldermen’s decision came after a deal fell through with a private developer, who was to build the station in exchange for the surrounding city-owned land.
