BALTIMORE — Mark Reynolds belted a pair of homers and drove in four runs to power the Baltimore Orioles past the Boston Red Sox Tuesday night, 7-1.

Reynolds capped a five-run sixth inning with a three-run shot off reliever Mark Melancon to lift the Orioles to their eighth win in 10 games.

Wei-Yin Chen (11-7) allowed one run and scattered nine hits in six-plus innings to keep Baltimore in line for one of the two American League wild-card slots.

Omar Quintanilla also belted a solo homer and Matt Wieters and Chris Davis chipped in RBI singles for the Orioles, who have won seven of 10 meetings with Boston.

Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett (5-10) was charged with six runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings and lost to the Orioles for the fourth straight time. He suffered his third straight defeat overall and remained winless in his last five starts.

Solo homers by Quintanilla and Reynolds gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead entering the sixth inning against Beckett, who allowed three singles, a walk and threw a wild pitch to plate two runs.

That brought in Melancon, whose first pitch to Reynolds was deposited over the wall in left field for a 7-1 lead. It was the first multi-homer game of the season and 15th career for Reynolds.

There was a moment of silence before the game to pay tribute to former Red Sox player and manager Johnny Pesky, who died Monday at age 92.

Shoppach traded

The Red Sox traded catcher Kelly Shoppach to the New York Mets on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named later.

Shoppach, 32, hit .250 (35-for-140) with 12 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 17 RBIs in 48 games for the Red Sox this season after signing with the club as a free agent in December 2011.

He started 42 games at catcher and threw out 26.9 percent of attempted base stealers (7 of 26).

He has a .227 career average in 508 career games over parts of eight seasons with the Red Sox (2005, 2012), Indians (2006-09) and Rays (2010-11).

Bailey activated

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Andrew Bailey made his first appearance of the season after being activated on Tuesday. Bailey was out following thumb surgery.

He threw 13 pitches, recording one out in the ninth inning Tuesday night.

Bailey, 28, was expected to be Boston’s closer this season, but he had surgery to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb on April 4.

He combined for a 1.42 ERA with 10 strikeouts and one walk over six rehab appearances between the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox, Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket.
