Fisher Cats split doubleheader at Akron

Brad Glenn and Brian Van Kirk each doubled in the seventh inning as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats rallied for a 3-1 victory late Friday night, splitting a doubleheader at Akron.

Right-hander Fernando Hernandez worked five innings without allowing an earned run, and reliever Marcus Stroman earned his first Double-A win after pitching a scoreless sixth inning.

Last-place New Hampshire (47-72) committed four errors but avoided being swept, thanks to a defensive miscue by Akron in the seventh. Following Van Kirk's 24th double of the season, Brad McElroy reached on a throwing error by shortstop Juan Diaz that allowed Van Kirk to score the go-ahead run. Brian Jeroloman added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Akron, which leads the Western Division, dropped to 69-49.

The night's first game was the completion of suspended game that began earlier this month in Manchester. After resuming play in the bottom of the third inning with Akron leading 3-2, the Aeros scored four more runs to close out the game with a 7-2 victory. Ryan Goins provided most of the offense for the Fisher Cats, reaching base three times on two doubles and a walk. Kevin Howard and Koby Clemens registered the other two New Hampshire hits.

Choyre Spoone (2-3) was tagged with the loss, despite allowing just three hits in his 2 2/3 innings of work. Spoone gave up two earned runs prior to the delay. Joel Carreno took over from there, tossing 2 1/3 innings of no-run, one-hit ball. Trystan Magnuson relieved Carreno, allowing three earned runs over the final two innings.

After scoring twice off Aeros starter Brett Brach, the combination of Trey Haley (1-0) and Shawn Armstrong shut down New Hampshire over the next 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.

The series continues tonight in Akron at 7:05 p.m.
