WINDHAM — Town employees served local seniors at a sports-themed picnic on Friday.

About 250 people filled the high school auditorium for the annual event. Town Administrator David Sullivan, Fire Chief Tom McPherson, Selectman Roger Hohenberger and others took turns manning the grill while town officials and employees served the food.

The seniors took to the dance floor and enjoyed some favorite tunes from the past and present.

State Rep. Walter Kolodziej was hard at work serving his constituents. The picnic is a good opportunity for people to enjoy a summer afternoon with friends they might not get to see often, he said.

“It's great to see all the other people my age having a great time together,” Kolodziej said.

Town employees have been hosting the picnic for more 12 years, said Recreation Coordinator Cheryl Haas. It was originally held at the town beach, Haas said. As attendance grew, it was moved to the Town Hall, then to the fire station, and finally to the high school.

Guests arrive dressed for the year's chosen theme and ready to have a good time. They kept the DJ busy with a steady stream of song requests ranging from Elvis Presley to the Macarena.

Barbara Coish, president of Windham Seniors, Inc., said the senior community looks forward to the event and is always impressed with how much the Recreation Department does with limited funds in the budget.

“It's greatly appreciated by all of us,” Coish said.

Dorothy Denicola said she wouldn't miss the annual picnic.

“I love it,” Denicola said. “I love this town.”
