Boats, campers not welcome at Epping town dump

EPPING — Boats and campers aren’t the kind of bulky items you expect to see at the town dump, and town officials hope to keep it that way.

Two fiberglass boats were dropped off at the dump on Old Hedding Road in recent weeks and last weekend a resident asked if he could haul over his 30-foot camper.

The boats — one about 18 feet long and the other 20 feet — were allowed to be dumped and crushed up like other items, officials said, but the camper was turned away.

In the future, boats and campers won’t be allowed.

“We do not take boats at the stump dump,” Selectman Tom Gauthier insisted at a board meeting Monday.

Town Administrator Gregory Dodge reminded him about campers as well.

If boats and other big items are allowed, Gauthier said the town should charge those disposing of them by the foot.

A sign posted at the dump lists items that can be dropped off for a fee, like couches, chairs, mattresses, carpets, refrigerators, computers, TVs and tires. Gauthier suggested that another sign be put up listing items that aren’t allowed.

This isn’t the first time boats have appeared at the dump. In 2009, an unwanted speedboat was dropped off and later used as a prop at Haunted Acres, a Halloween attraction at New England Dragway.

Haunted Acres co-owner John Tracy heard about the boat and thought it would make a cool display, so the boat was pulled from a pile of junk, brought to the site of Haunted Acres, covered with wooden planks and made to resemble a pirate shipwreck, complete with a large cannon that fired fog at visitors.

At that time, selectmen said they wouldn’t accept boats, but others have made it through since then.
