New Manchester Corps Commanders longtime veterans of Salvation Army

MANCHESTER — There is a change in command at the Manchester Corps of the Salvation Army.
Lts. Herb and Miriam Rader are being transferred north from New London, Conn., to replace Capts. Shaun and Kim Belanger, who are moving on to posts in Cincinnati.
“We’re happy to come there,” Herb Rader said. “We think it will be wonderful.”
The Raders are longtime veterans of the philanthropic corps, following their parents’ lead and making a life of the Army’s motto “Doing the Most Good.”
The couple has spent the last four years in New London, their first post as Corps Commanders. They received word this summer that they were being transferred to Manchester, the largest of the Salvation Army’s 10 operations in New Hampshire. They got a brief look at their new home on the way back from an Army meeting in Maine last month.
“On our way down from there we just drove through the city to kind of get feel for it and the flavor,” Rader said. “We think the Army is great in Manchester and we’ve heard great things about the community support for the Army.”
The official start date for the Raders is Aug. 22.
Herb Rader, 47, graduated from Asbury College in Kentucky, attended graduate school at Hofstra University and some seminary. After serving in various roles at Salvation Army headquarters and as territorial Internet director before deciding to expand his commitment in the field.
“I had wanted to be involved in more direct ministry but it’s a tough call to make,” he said. ““I felt finally that I want to follow my calling and do something that I thought God was leading me to in my life rather than just try and make a living.”
Miriam Rader is a graduate of William and Catherine Booth Bible College in Canada and received a master’s degree from Alliance Seminary.
Both grew up in Army families, spending parts of their childhood in southern India as their parents served as missionaries. Although the families were close friends, Miriam was just a child when Herb returned to the United States as an 18-year-old in December 1982.
They reconnected years later as adults when Herb’s mother invited Miriam, who was serving at a post in Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories, for a visit to New York.
“My mom and her mom were kind of like sisters,” Herb said.
The Raders were married in 2004 and have no children.
They will be stepping in for the Belangers, who have been Corps Commanders in Manchester since the summer of 2010. The couple will serve as Division Youth and Candidates Secretaries in Cincinnati.
