MANCHESTER — The Retired Men's Association will host a presentation — “The Bioptic: What it is, What it Does and How it Enables the Low Vision Driver” — at its meeting Tuesday, Aug. 21.
With a bioptic, a driver uses a small telescopic system intermittently to enhance and sharpen vision. During the presentation, the men will be able to look through a bioptic and see how it magnifies signs, road environments and conditions, giving the driver with low vision more time to adjust driving requirements.
The presenter, Rene Paquin, has a master's in education from Boston College, with a specialty in “peripatology,” or the science of walking about, and a certificate in low vision. He teaches blind people to travel with a white cane and visually impaired people to adapt magnifiers, telescopes and electronic devices to enlarge areas of their world they need to see.
The association meets monthly with a social hour and refreshments at 10:30 a.m., followed by a guest speaker from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The meetings, which are free, are at Community Health Services (formerly called Prime Time) on the ground floor at 195 McGregor St., across from Catholic Medical Center. The group is open to any men interested.
For more information, contact Tom Arnold at tomtarnold@att.net or 965-3573.
The association also has a computer group, which meets the second Thursday of the month, and a cribbage group, which meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. For more about the computer group, email Jim Theodosopoulos at jimtheo@comcast.net . For cribbage information, contact Bob Campbell at 669-4944 or soupie28@comcast.net.
