Tigers' five-run fifth sinks Sox, 7-5
Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder hit back-to-back homers in a five-run fifth inning and visiting Detroit avoided a three-game sweep with a rare win at Fenway Park.
Delmon Young also homered and three other players drove in single runs as the Tigers snapped Boston's four-game winning streak and remained 2 1/2 games behind the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox.
Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello (8-6) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to help the Tigers win for only the third time in nine games.
Octavio Dotel and Joaquin Benoit each pitched a scoreless inning in relief before Jose Valverde nailed it down in the ninth for his 21st save.
Carl Crawford homered and Cody Ross had a pair of hits and an RBI single for Boston, which lost to Detroit for only the second time in the last 11 meetings at Fenway.
Red Sox starter Aaron Cook (2-5) lasted only 4 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits to absorb his fourth consecutive defeat.
Detroit snapped a 1-1 tie in the fifth on an RBI single from Austin Jackson and a run-scoring groundout by Quintin Berry before Cabrera hammered a hanging breaking ball over everything in left field and Fielder followed with a shot into the bleachers in center for a 6-1 lead.
Boston battled back with three runs in the sixth, getting RBI singles from Will Middlebrooks and Pedro Ciriaco, and closed to 6-5 on Crawford's solo homer in the seventh.
