Stage is set for a ‘Derry’s Got Talent’ showdown
DERRY — Can you carry a tune? Know any good jokes? Can you juggle a fish bowl, basketball and sword?
If you have a hidden or not-so-hidden talent, the Greater Derry Arts Council and the Derryfest Committee are looking for you to take part in the Derry’s Got Talent competition on Friday, Sept. 14, at the Derry Opera House at 7 p.m.
The event is in conjunction with the town’s annual Derryfest town fair at MacGregor Park the following day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to Mike Gendron, Derryfest Committee vice president.
“We hope to attract talented individuals of all ages and abilities from the Greater Derry community to participate,” said Gendron. “We wish to truly emphasize that this is not just a singing competition, but a talent show where anyone of any age can come and perform their special talent.”
The event is a fundraiser benefiting Derryfest as well as the continued operation and upkeep of the Derry Opera House. Tickets are $7 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors.
Winners of the competition will be chosen by a panel of judges as well as by the audience. With a paid admission, audience members get one ticket allowing them to vote for their favorite performer.
“The top three vote-getters of Derry’s Got Talent will receive a prize package including cash and gift cards from our sponsor, How’s Your Onion restaurant,” said Gendron. “Most importantly, the winners will be given the honor of performing their talent the very next day at Derryfest right on the main stage at MacGregor Park.”
There will be a limit on the number of performers during the show, and the application deadline is Sept. 6. Performers who wish to take part may apply through the Derryfest website at www.derryfest.org.
There is a $15 entry fee for all performers and an audition on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Derry Opera House at 29 West Broadway.
“Those who do not make it into the show’s lineup will receive a refund,” said Gendron. “But the hope is to include as many folks that wish to participate as possible. It will be great entertainment for the whole family, and a great way to kick off Derryfest weekend.”
