Bedford 11- and 12-year-old all-stars set to compete in regional tournament

CONCORD – On Sunday, July 22, the Bedford 11- and 12-year-old all-stars were crowned New Hampshire state champions, beating Lamprey River 14-0 at Grappone Park in Concord. WInning the three-game series earned Bedford a ticket to the New England regional tournament in Bristol, Conn., which will be held from Aug. 3 to 12.

Bedford, as the New Hampshire champion, will play the Vermont champion on Friday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m.; the Rhode Island champion on Monday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m.; the Massachusetts champ on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m.; and the Maine champion on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 5 p.m. The last two games will be televised live by NESN.

In the state tournament, Timmy Saltzman pitched a complete game, two-hitter, in the clinching game. Five different players hit home runs to account for 10 of Bedford’s runs. Saltzman faced one batter above the minimum and recorded six strikeouts.

Grant Lavigne, Connor Zendian and Patrick Harrington each hit a solo home solo home run, while Alec Burns logged a three-run blastin the fifth inning in addition to Peyton Murray’s grand slam in the sixth.

Zendzian also had a two-run single in the third inning and Burns and Brennan Hughes drove in another run each. Connor Collins had two singles and scored three runs. The 12-hit attack was plenty of support for Saltzman.

Defensively, Lavigne made a great stop of a hard hit grounder and Nick Mokas stretched and made a nice stab of the throw to nip the Lamprey River runner at first early in the game.

In the first game of the state championship tournament on Saturday, July 21, Bedford defeated Lamprey River, 9-2.
Lavigne hit a solo homer in the bottom of the first and was walked three times, scoring each time.

Zendzian put up three singles and an RBI, and Collins, Burns and Brennan Hughes each had two RBIs.

Murray added one RBI and one hit, along with Joey Barrett and Greg Tayloin the 10-hit attack.

Lavigne pitched 5 1/3 innings of 7-hit, 2-run ball with five strikeouts and Collins closed out the game by getting two outs after giving up a single.

To get to the state tournament, Bedford had to win the District 1 Little League tournament.

They went undefeated (5-0) in District play and defeated Goffstown 11-8 on July 14at the Goffstown complex.

Once again, Bedford used the long ball to take an early lead and hold on for the win. Burns hit a two-run blast in the first, Hughes hit a three-run shot in the third and Lavigne socked a two-run shot in the fifth.

Zendzian had two singles and an RBI and Saltzman added an RBI single.

Lavigne recorded the win, giving up five runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. Saltzman got the last four outs but gave up three runs on four hits.

In the winners bracket game on July 7, Bedford defeated Manchester East 11-6.

Lavigne opened the scoring with a two run homer in the first inning.

Barrett added a two run blast in the fifth and Mokas had a run-scoring double in that frame. Zendzian added three singles and an RBI and Burns had two singles and an RBI as part of the 12-hit attack.

Ryan Lee had a hit and scored a run for Bedford as well.

Collins and Saltzman pitched for Bedford with Saltzman getting the win in the comeback.

On July 2, Bedford defeated Goffstown at Ho Sang Field at the Bedford Little League complex 18-4 in its only home game in both tournaments.

As part of the 16-hit attack, Lavigne had five hits (three singles, a triple and a home run) and six RBI, Burns recorded three hits (single, double and homer) with four RBI and Collins and Hughes had two hits each.

Joseph Quintal had a hit and scored a run for Bedford as well.

Lavigne (five innings and four runs) and Collins (one inning) pitched for Bedford, who scored seven runs in the sixth inning to blow the game open.

Prior to that Bedford, beat Pelham, 29-4, on June 29, and Windham, 16 -0, on June 27.

Over seven games, the team batting average is .449, the slugging percentage is .854, the on base percentage is .548 and the on base plus slugging percentage is 1.401.

They have outscored their opponents 108 to 22. Five of the players are hitting .500 or better and the team has hit 23 home runs.
