Go Green Derry is going after litter

DERRY — The Go Green Derry committee is taking littering seriously.

The nonprofit group recently started a town-wide anti-littering campaign in conjunction with Keep America Beautiful focusing on getting residents to pick up their cigarette butts, among other activities.

The group has distributed signs stating “This is litter, too” with a picture of a cigarette butt throughout the town.

In addition to the signs, Go Green Derry also received 200 pocket ashtrays from Keep America Beautiful that it will be distributing at Derryfest in September as well as at other events throughout town.

“We want to build some partnerships in town to hand these out,” said Follo, noting that there are not places to dispose of cigarettes on every street corner.

“It would be a maintenance headache to put one on every street corner,” she said. “Plus many new cars do not have ashtrays. The portable ashtrays are one way we can approach it.”

Motorists tossing cigarette butts out of car windows is a problem throughout town, said Conservation Commission Chairman Margaret Ives.

“It’s hard to break the habit of throwing butts out the window, but when you see a street corner littered with them, it’s not sanitary,” she said.

Follo noted that while street sweepers pick up many of the butts along the side of the town’s roads, they are not running every day.

“During rainstorms, they also go easily down into the drains and that can be an issue in the long run,” she said.

In addition to the portable ashtrays and anti-cigarette littering signs, Go Green has also distributed signs throughout some town conservation areas asking residents to clean up after their dogs.

There is a laminated clean up after your pooch sign at the information kiosk at Broadview Farm, Follo said, but Go Green is looking at the possibility of putting up a metal sign on the property in a more visible location.

“These people with dogs, the dogs are just ready to jump out and run. People don’t have time to read the signs,” Follo said.
