NJ woman needed piggyback rides down Mt. Washington
A New Jersey woman needed help getting down Mount Washington on Saturday after getting stuck on the Jewel Trail, and Fish and Game officers obliged with piggyback rides.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Sgt. Wayne Saunders said Dee Schardt, 69, of Sea Girt, N.J., had gone up Mt. Washington with a friend on the Cog Railroad. At the top, she was given some bad information that the Jewel Trail was an easy trail down the mountain, Saunders said.
When Schardt and her companion started hiking down Mount Washington a little before noon, they had no food, water, or lights, Saunders said. Schardt got stuck on the difficult trail, and calls for help started coming in around 8 p.m., Saunders said.
Passing hikers assisted by giving her food and Gatorade and staying with her until Fish and Game officers arrived, Saunders said. The officer helped the exhausted woman climb down the mountain, and gave her piggyback rides at times to get her down. Schardt did not seek medical attention.
