On Obama campaign swing to NH, Science Guy Nye's views might bring heat

MANCHESTER — Science Guy Bill Nye, who was in New Hampshire Monday campaigning for President Barack Obama, said he might get heat for his views on global warming.

In fact, he made Obama's New Hampshire campaign nervous.

At a press conference, Nye said, “I will claim — and people will attack me for this — the extraordinary weather we have this summer is consistent with climate change models.”

The educational television host went on to say that this spring's tornadoes in Brooklyn and Michigan are consistent with climate change models.

When pressed for Obama's views about this summer's weather and global warming, the campaign released a statement.

“Scientists have shown that extreme weather has been linked to climate change,” said Obama New Hampshire spokesman Harrell Kirstein. “Unlike Mitt Romney, President Obama believes the science behind climate change, including that human activity is accelerating the problem, and supports decisive action to address this global issue.”

Romney has acknowledged climate change but says he doesn't know what causes it. Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams did not return an email seeking comment.

Nye and Democratic Congressman Rob Andrews, D-N.J., made several stops in New Hampshire Monday to promote Obama's education record.
