Miss Greater Derry to help out at Community Caregivers of Derry open house

DERRY — Newly crowned Miss Greater Derry Kendall Wipff will be on hand as part of Community Caregivers of Greater Derry’s summer open house on Thursday, Aug. 12.

The open house runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Community Caregivers’ office in the Masonic Temple next to the Derry Public Library at 58 West Broadway.

“Community members will have the opportunity to talk with staff and board members about our volunteer opportunities, client services, and our loaner’s closet for durable medical equipment,” said Executive Director Cindee Tanuma.

Wipff will be meeting the public and serving free frozen treats provided by Stoneyfield Farm. There will be summer beach gift basket door prizes and giveaways.

“Make it an evening out with the family by joining us for our open house and then proceeding to MacGregor Park for the Josh Logan Trio concert sponsored by the Derry Parks and Recreaton Department at 7 p.m.,” said Tanuma.

Community Caregivers, through a volunteer network, assists the elderly and disabled with services such as friendly visiting, respite care, grocery shopping, light chores, light home repair and maintenance, yard work and medical transportation.

“Services offered through Caregivers are vitally important as they allow individuals to maintain independence in the community and home environment,” said Tanuma. “All services are free of charge.”

She said the organization has tremendous opportunities for volunteers, even those who may only have a few spare hours per month to drive the elderly and disabled to medical appointments.

The loaner’s closet operated by Community Caregivers has more than 3,700 pieces of equipment that are free to the general public for loan as long as they are needed. The organization is also seeking donations of gently used, clean medical equipment, according to Tanuma.

Anyone unable to attend the open house or who has general questions on volunteering or accessing volunteer caregiving services can call 432-0877 or visit www.comcaregivers.org.
