Beating the heat: A book and a walk, to start
The weather folks have been forecasting a possible heat wave this week. In a state in which a lot of people own not a single air conditioner, that is not exactly welcome news, even if it might make the water at the beach warm enough for swimming (just keep an eye out for sharks).
What is there to do in New Hampshire in 90-plus degree weather? Plenty, if you know where to look. You can start at your local library.
The Manchester Public Library has plenty of books for a good summer read, but also a theater, and this week the library is screening a lot of movies. Our favorite: Thursday through Saturday the library is showing a bunch of silent film shorts. There are other events, too, including children’s story time and a family puppet show.
If the town pool is too crowded or just not your thing, a lot of state parks have lakes. You can bring the family and spend a day at a state park for less than it costs to take the whole family to a movie.
Even in 90-degree heat, a walk in the woods will cool you off. You might be surprised by how much cooler it is in the woods on a hot summer day. Bring water and bug spray, and you’ve got a nice way to spend a day outside and out of the sun. If you live far from a state park or national forest, you still might still have a trail nearby. Many towns have their own hiking and biking trails, and many of those are seldom used, which makes them even more fun to explore.
Of course, you always could run out and buy a window unit and stay inside the house. But you have all winter to do that. And it is coming fast. Just as soon as you’re done complaining about the heat, the wind will bring that familiar chill again. So stop complaining and enjoy it while it lasts.
