Fire damages former UNH frat house
DURHAM - Firefighters battled a blaze overnight in a former University of New Hampshire fraternity house that was boarded up last December after a police raid.
The fire in the former Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house at 66 Main St. was discovered by a Durham police officer at 2:20 a.m., according to WMUR-TV.
The building was boarded up a week after police arrested 11 fraternity brothers, nine for drug and alcohol charges and two others on disorderly conduct charges, in a Nov. 6, 2011 raid.
The bust came three months after an underage woman became intoxicated while at the fraternity house. The fraternity's national organization voted to revoke the local chapter's recognition just before the raid.
Officials said the blaze is suspicious and both police and fire are investigating its cause, WMUR is reporting.
Durham fire officials did not immediately return a call from UnionLeader.com.
