Driver seriously injured in accident along Route 16 in Dover

DOVER - One person was transported to the hospital with serious injuries after being involved in an accident along Route 16 Monday afternoon.

Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded at 2:16 p.m. after a Ford pickup and a Honda, which were both heading southbound, struck each other near the line between the Rochester border and Exit 9, according to Assistant Fire Chief Jim Ormond.

'It was a very unusual spot,' Ormond said, adding the accident occurred as the vehicles crested a hill.

'They ran off the road, went down the embankment and into the trees,' Ormond said, adding the driver of the pickup was trapped in the vehicle since it pressed up against a tree on the driver's side.

Ormond said firefighters used hydraulic extrication equipment to free the driver, who was eventually transported to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital by Dover ambulance crews. He was not sure whether the drivers wore seatbelts, but noticed that the air bags did not deploy.

Once the vehicles were towed away, crews from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation responded to the scene to rake the embankment around 3:30 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation by members of N.H. State Police Troop A.
