ORFORD — Rescuers had to carry a 47-year-old Hanover woman over “two miles of very steep and rocky trail” Thursday from the top of Mount Cube after she took a bad fall while hiking and was unable to walk, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials.

Christina Brownell was about a half-mile from the summit in Orford around 1 p.m. when she slipped and fell on a rock, according to Fish and Game Sgt. Brian Suttmeier.

“As a result of the fall, Mrs. Brownell sustained injuries to her back, leaving her unable to walk,” Suttmeier said in a news release. A family member who was with her used the woman's cell phone to summon help, he said.

Fish and Game officers enlisted the help of a dozen Upper Valley Search and Rescue Team members who were joined by Orford police and fire personnel. At least 20 rescuers, including five from Fish and Game, made the trek over rugged terrain in the next few hours and brought Brownell down safely to a waiting ambulance Thursday night. They made it down to Route 25A at about 7 p.m.

Brownell was transported to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for evaluation and treatment, according to Suttmeier.
