DERRY — The Public Works Department will install extra signage near the intersection of Ash and North High streets in an effort to slow traffic in the area.

Andrea Murphy of North High Street raised the safety concern to the town's Highway Safety Committee. According to safety committee member Al Dimmock, Murphy's house was struck by a vehicle and knocked off its foundation and then relocated further back on the property after the accident.

Between 2003 and June of this year, there were 11 accidents in the area of Ash and North High streets, according to Police Chief Ed Garone.

For areas considered a particular danger for cars to run off the road, highway supervisor Alan Cote said the highway department typically installs guardrails. However, Cote said the section of road near that intersection doesn't curve enough to warrant guardrails.

Garone noted that the situation at the intersection most closely mirrors the situation on Route 102 by Cousin's Farm, where the state installed chevron signs, which alert drivers to sharp turns, on the road to address the problem.

Cote said he wasn't sure if there was a sharp enough curve near the North High Street intersection to place the chevron signs, but Fire Chief George Klauber said he expected motorists would slow down if they saw the signs.
