Hiker rescued on Appalachian Trail
BEAN'S PURCHASE — A mountain rescue team was called on Tuesday to assist an Appalachian Trail through-hiker from Virginia.
Jason Farr, 25, of Charlottesville, Va., was suffering from a potentially serious, but “unknown medical condition,” while hiking the Wildcat Ridge Trail when he summoned help at about 1 p.m. Tuesday, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officer Mark Ober said in a news release.
Three conservation officers “enlisted the assistance of two (Appalachian Mountain Club) first responders from the Pinkham AMC center as well as two members of Gorham EMS who utilized the Wildcat Ski Area Tram to the summit of” Wildcat Mountain, where they found Farr, Ober wrote, about a half-mile from the summit.
Two other hikers who happened upon the stricken hiker also provided assistance, he said.
“After an evaluation, Farr was able to walk the remaining distance to the tram where he was relayed to the bottom to the awaiting ambulance.
Farr was transported to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin for further evaluation and treatment,” wrote Ober, who said Farr had reported no previous medical difficulties while attempting the Appalachian Trail, which he has been hiking since late February.
