Truck crash leads to two arrests
SALEM — Two men were arrested early Monday morning after Salem police responded to reports of a truck careening off the road and through two yards along Millville Street.
The driver, Peter Lee, 20, of Salem, fled on foot, but was tracked down by a police dog, police said. Lee was charged with conduct after an accident, drunken driving and driving after revocation.
His passenger, Timothy Fitzpatrick, 28, of Salem was charged with reckless conduct for allegedly jerking the steering wheel just before the car went off the road.
Police responded to 102 Millville Street at 1:40 a.m. for a report of a motor vehicle crash with injury.
A Toyota Rav4 had left the roadway in the area of 98 Millville Street and went through two back yards and a fence before hitting a vehicle parked in the driveway of 102 Millville Street, police said.
Fitzpatrick was on the scene when police arrived, but Lee had fled on foot, police said.
Officer Paul Benoit and police dog Til tracked Lee to Stone Post Road, where he was taken into custody.
Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten said Lee and Fitzpatrick were highly intoxicated, and police learned that Fitzpatrick jerked the steering wheel causing the vehicle to go off the road.
Lee and Fitzpatrick were released after being booked at the police station. They will have to appear for arraignment at 10 Circuit Court in Salem.
