Merrimack OKs Atrium plan to expand industrial building

MERRIMACK — Town planners have given Atrium Medical Corp. the green light to relocate its company headquarters from Hudson into a vacant building on Continental Boulevard.

Officials from Atrium Medical, a cutting edge medical manufacturing company, originally proposed constructing a new facility near Campers Inn, but withdrew those plans earlier this year to instead pursue an already existing building in town.

The company found a suitable industrial building at 40 Continental Blvd., which was formerly occupied by Fidelity Investments but has been empty for about four years. Last week, the planning board approved a site plan application and change of use request for Atrium Medical to move into the industrial building and expand it by about 90,000-square-feet.

“The town's management team is excited with the prospect of this project moving forward. It presents the town with another economic development boost to the Continental Boulevard corridor, represents a substantial contribution to the town's non-residential tax base, as well as creating a significant new employer within Merrimack,” Timothy Thompson, community developer director, wrote in a memo on file at town hall.

Atrium Medical, which was acquired by Swedish company Getinge Group for $680 million last fall, currently operates from multiple sites at its existing headquarters in Hudson.

“Our company has grown tremendously over the last few years and is projected to continue expanding in the years to come. Therefore, it is necessary for us to relocate our headquarters to a facility that will meet the needs of our employees and customers in the future,” Trevor Carlton, president of Atrium Medical said in a recent statement. “Moving our headquarters also allows us the opportunity to continue collaborating with leading clinicians and researchers from around the world to meet the demands for expansive evidence-based clinical trials that can lead to important med-tech discoveries with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.”

Atrium Medical currently employs about 450 people in its existing facility in Hudson, but plans to expand to 700 over the next several years at its new Merrimack site, according to company officials.

Plans at the 54-acre site on Continental Boulevard include using the existing 114,000-square-feet building and a 90,000-square-feet addition for a manufacturing, office, research and development facility. A new loading area will also be established, according to the site plans on file at the town's community development office.

“The new campus will provide the resources and space necessary for Atrium's growing family of talented and dedicated employees as they continue their mission of excellence,” said a recent press release.

Atrium Medical, which was founded in 1981, manufactures more than 2.7 million sterile medical products distributed in more than 60 countries each year, according to its website. It is a business unit of MAQUET Cardiovascular, and manufactures equipment used in cardiac catheterization labs and hospital operating rooms. It is currently conducting several multi-center clinical trials, says the website.
