Vt. tips NH in Twin State field hockey
The New Hampshire all stars couldn’t hold off a second-half surge from Vermont, and the Granite State squad lost, 3-2, in overtime in the Twin State Field Hockey Classic at the University of Vermont in Burlington on Saturday.
New Hampshire led 2-0 at the break, but Vermont came back to tie it, 2-2, in the second half. The hosts then won the game on a goal by Liz Znamierowski of Mt. Mansfield Union High 3:50 into overtime.
“I think it was a wonderful back-and-forth contest,” said Debra Beach, president of the New Hampshire Field Hockey Coaches Association. “It’s a nice way for our seniors to represent New Hampshire one more time.”
The game is played between the best high school seniors from New Hampshire and Vermont. Now in its 29th year, New Hampshire holds a 17-9-3 edge in the overall series.
Shining for the New Hampshire squad was Molly Heaney of Exeter. The University of New Hampshire-bound senior scored her team’s first goal and assisted on the second.
She put New Hampshire up 1-0 when she poked in the rebound of a shot by Kate Adinolfo of Manchester Memorial with 13:36 left in the first half.
The second goal was prettier. Heaney had the ball inside the circle and crossed a pass to Leah Kenison-Marvin of Kingswood of Wolfeboro, who redirected the pass slightly off the ground and into the goal to make it 2-0 with 10:16 remaining before the break.
The Granite State squad held the 2-0 lead at the break, but it didn’t take Vermont long to get some offense going in the second half.
Sam Fox of Harwood Union High cut the lead in half when she scored just 3:30 in. Then it was Morgan Bresnahan of South Burlington High who tied it up with 11:46 left in regulation. Her teammate at South Burlington, Molly Higgins, got an assist on the equalizer.
Two goalies split time in net for New Hampshire and combined to make eight saves. They were Shauna Whittemore of ConVal of Peterborough and Jodi Dumayne of Stevens of Claremont. The head coaches were Jean Essex-Linehan of Hanover and Tara Bailey of Profile of Bethlehem.
Their assistants were Carrie Whittemore of ConVal and Melissa Spanos of Kearsarge of North Sutton.
