Breast cancer survivor praises Affordable Care Act; new ads decry federal health tax

MANCHESTER - Breast cancer survivor Irene Grand of Strafford said the Affordable Care Act gave her freedom from fear.

“The fear of losing my health insurance, the fear that my daughters will be denied health care benefits due to their family history, the fear that I could lose everything I have ever worked for due to medical bills,” Grand said Friday in a conference call hosted by U.S. Action, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group.

Meanwhile, an advocacy group opposing the decision, the Americans For Prosperity Foundation, announced Friday that it was launching a $9 million media campaign called, “Not A Tax” that will run in New Hampshire and 11 other states.

“President Obama's health care law is irresponsible and unaffordable. It is bad policy for our country, and if the Supreme Court will not rule it unconstitutional, then it is up to Congress to fully repeal the legislation,” said Corey Lewandowski, New Hampshire state director of AFP. “At Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire, we will continue to fight against this policy until Washington, D.C., finally responds and throws out this harmful law.”

On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court said the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, called Obamacare by opponents, is constitutional.

Grand, a 56-year-old teacher, cried when she heard the news, she said.

“For the first time in our history our American health care rights are guaranteed by this legislation,” she said.

Grand was one of several individuals who have benefitted from the Affordable Care Act who spoke on the call.

“These stories are not extraordinary,” said Jeff Blum, U.S. Action executive director. “Indeed, there are millions of Americans who have similar stories to tell. We believe the more America hears these stories — of friends, neighbors and loved ones receiving quality, affordable health care due to what Congress passed and the President signed— the more popular health care reform will be.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has published a list on its web site of benefits to New Hampshire from the Affordable Care Act.
