Things fell apart late for the Fisher Cats as the bullpen gave up five runs in the eighth inning and the Sea Dogs pulled away for a 9-3 win at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine, on Friday night.

New Hampshire trailed by just a run, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the eighth. Then Portland got to reliever Stephen Marek for all five runs.

The first came home when Jackie Bradley Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk. Jeremy Hazelbaker followed that up with a two-run double, which was followed up by a two-run single from Bryce Brentz.

Brock Huntzinger retired the Fisher Cats in order in the top of the ninth to close the game out. Portland improved to 33-46, while New Hampshire dropped to 30-48.

The Fisher Cats struck first with a run in the first inning when Ryan Goins hit his fourth home run of the year.

But the lead didn’t last for long. The Sea Dogs came back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning and never trailed after that. Hazelbaker drove in two runs that inning for Portland as well, giving him four on the night, and Bradley plated the other.

New Hampshire managed to tie the game, 3-3, with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Mike McDade scored when one when he came home on a wild pitch and Mark Sobolewski scored the other when Kevin Howard grounded out to the second baseman.

Derrick Gibson picked up an RBI single for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the sixth to give them a 4-3 lead, then things came undone for New Hampshire in the eighth when Marek took over for Chad Jenkins.

Jenkins gave up four runs (three earned) over the first seven innings for the Fisher Cats. Stolmy Pimentel worked six innings for Portland to pick up the win and improve to 2-4.

The Fisher Cats continue their road trip at Reading today at 6:35 p.m.
