Man rescued from water near Franconia Falls
LINCOLN — Rescuers mobilized Thursday for the successful nighttime retrieval of a Massachusetts man from high and rapidly-moving waters near Franconia Falls in Lincoln, New Hampshire Fish and Game officials said Friday.
Responding to a call for help at about 7:10 p.m., Fish and Game officers headed for the Lincoln Woods trailhead, the first step in finding a hiker identified as Anthony Castellucci of Dunstable, Mass.
Members of the Lincoln Fire Department and LinWood Ambulance joined the effort, which included a 3-mile hike to Castellucci's location. Rescuers used all-terrain-vehicles to haul equipment and transport personnel, and arrived at Castellucci's location at about 8:15 p.m., according to a Fish and Game Department news release, and began a “swift-water rescue.”
“Once rescuers secured the necessary ropes and equipment, Patrick Griffin of LinWood Ambulance and Deputy Chief Ed Peterson of Lincoln Fire guided Mr. Castellucci to safety. “The recovery took place at 8:25 p.m.,” Fish and Game officers said in the release.
After Castellucci was rescued from the water, he received first-aid treatment for signs of hypothermia. His condition was stabilized and he was safely transported by ATV to the trailhead for further evaluation.
“Mr. Castellucci was fortunate that passerby hikers called authorities to report the incident. Recent rain in New Hampshire's White Mountains has resulted in fast water and high water levels and he could have been seriously injured,” Fish and Game officials wrote.
They also offered the following advice as the Fourth of July approaches: “Please remember to pack appropriate clothing and equipment while hiking and recreating. It is also always good practice to hike with a partner in case of a medical emergency.
“Hikes often take longer than anticipated and weather is unpredictable. Having appropriate gear aides in safety. Please visit www.hikesafe.com for a list of recommended equipment.”
