Red Sox trade Youkilis to White Sox

BOSTON – The Red Sox pulled the trigger on a Kevin Youkilis deal Sunday, sending the first baseman/third baseman and cash to help pay his salary, to the White Sox in exchange for righty Zach Stewart and utility player Brent Lillibridge.

The Red Sox announced the trade after Sunday's 9-4 win over the Braves.

Youkilis was removed from the game for a pinch runner in a touching seventh-inning scene, was nowhere to be found and his name had been removed from the top of the locker by the time the media hit the clubhouse after the game.

Red Sox bench coach Tim Bogar brought the official dugout lineup card into the room and placed it in Youkilis' locker.

“He needs to go play and get rolling,” now-former teammate Dustin Pedroia said before joining his current teammates on the field for Family Day, with a member of the family now missing. “He's a great player and we've all seen what he's done here, so it's good for both sides.”

Youkilis, 33, finishes his Boston career as a .287 hitter with 133 homers and 564 RBIs. Hampered by back trouble that landed him on the disabled list from May 2-22, he is batting just .233 with four homers and 14 RBIs this year.

Stewart, 25, is 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in 18 games with the White Sox this season. Lillibridge, 28, is hitting .175 with two RBIs and seven stolen bases in 48 games.
