Fisher Cats defeat Reading for fourth straight victory
MANCHESTER — John Tolisano homered on the first pitch by Reading starter Trevor May, and the Fisher Cats won their fourth straight with a 4-3 triumph at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Wednesday night.
Tolisano went 3-for-4, setting the tone as New Hampshire beat the Phillies No. 1 prospect before a crowd of 5,536. May (6-5) gave up three runs in the first inning before settling down and working five innings, yielding seven hits and striking out six.
Gabe Jacobo’s two-run double gave the Fisher Cats a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and rehabbing major leaguer Ben Francisco ripped a single in the fifth to plate New Hampshire’s fourth run. Francisco, recovering from a hamstring injury, went 1-for-4 while showing no limitations on the bases or in right field.
Spot starter Fernando Hernandez (1-4), who has served primary as a reliever, pitched into the sixth inning to notch his first Fisher Cats win. Hernandez opened the game with a perfect inning but gave up a two-run homer to Sebastian Valle in the second. Reading trimmed the lead to 4-3 with another run charged to Hernandez in the sixth.
Fisher Cats reliever Scott Gracey inherited a bases-loaded jam in the sixth but escaped by inducing a double play grounder and retiring Valle on a fly ball to center field.
Flame-throwing righty Sam Dyson pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to seal the game and earn his first professional save.
The free-and-easy throwing Dyson, who popped 95-mph on the radar gun, gave up an extra-base hit to Brandon Tripp to lead off the ninth. Tripp, however, was thrown out at third in pursuit of a triple.
The four-game winning streak is the longest of the season for last-place New Hampshire (26-43), which has knocked off Reading (39-30) from atop the Eastern Division standings.
