OSSIPEE — A Carroll County grand jury has handed up 16 indictments, including a charge of attempted murder, in the case of a Wolfeboro man who police say used a rock and a campfire to assault his girlfriend.

David Connor Ford, 31, is to be arraigned in Carroll County Superior Court in Ossipee Wednesday morning.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in 3rd Circuit Court District Division in Ossipee by Wolfeboro police detective Guy Maloney in April, Krystal Durkee suffered broken bones and burns to her hands, arms and face.

Ford allegedly assaulted Durkee during an argument at her house on April 23 after both of them had been drinking alcohol. When Durkee told Ford she cheated on him with another man, Ford started beating her head with a rock. She told Maloney that Ford put her hands over hot coals over a camp fire for about 10 seconds, and that she was afraid he was going to kill her.

Durkee was treated and released from Huggins Hospital, with injuries ranging from facial trauma, nasal fracture, a right orbital fracture, multiple abrasions, contusions and burns.

According to court documents, Ford is charged with attempted murder, a Class A felony, for allegedly striking Durkee with a rock in the head and face.

The two felony counts of first-degree assault, and the five counts of second-degree assault, allege that Ford caused fractures to Durkee's face.

Two additional counts of felony criminal restraint allege that Ford pinned Durkee to the ground by her shoulders so he could beat and strike her with a rock, and throw her into a fire. Three misdemeanor counts of criminal threatening allege that Ford threatened to kill the victim, cut off some of her body parts and throw her into a fire.

Three additional counts of misdemeanor simple assault charge Ford with dragging the victim to the fire pit, knocking her to the ground and striking her in the face with his fists.

Durkee did not initially report the attack and it wasn't until two days later, April 25, that Detective Maloney followed up with the victim at her home after receiving information from the Tuftonboro Police Department. Ford was arrested without incident later the morning of April 25 after he was located at Wolfeboro Baptist Church.

Ford has been held without bail at the Carroll County Jail.

In April, Wolfeboro Lt. Dean Rondeau, a military veteran who has served in Iraq, described Durkee's injuries as the worst he's ever seen.

“I can't imagine how she survived,” he said. “It amazes me she was even on her feet when the officer arrived.”
