Potential sites for new Londonderry dog park down to three

LONDONDERRY — It’s a dog’s life, indeed.

During Monday night’s Town Council meeting, Dog Park Study Committee Chairman Dottie Grover updated councilors about the town’s ongoing dog park project.

“We don’t have a definite size in mind right now,” Grover said. “ Of course, a bigger park would be nice, but it really depends on how much work is needed on the site, including fencing in the area.”

Last August, the Town Council voted unanimously in favor of forming the seven-member study committee, and monthly meetings began this past fall.

Since then, committee members have been working on a document stating the need and demand for a local dog park, while researching possible locations.

Among the factors being considered are health and safety requirements, construction and operating costs, and potential funding sources.

A final report of the committee’s findings and recommendations will be submitted to the Town Council in late December 2012, though a preliminary report of the committee’s mission should be completed in November.

On Monday evening, Grover said the committee considered six potential locations for the dog park but has since narrowed those possibilities down to three locations.

“We’re beginning to pursue (those three) options, and as soon as the location is determined, we’ll begin to talk costs,” said Grover. “We can’t really get an idea on costs until we have a location determined.”

The goal, she added, is to plan various fundraising events to help make the park a reality, noting that corporate sponsorships “are something we’re certainly hoping for as well.”

“Donations of materials and labor would also be welcomed,” said Grover.

Over the past few months, the committee has visited dog parks in Amherst, Manchester, Concord, Derry, Dover and Portsmouth.

“We got information from the folks involved as to how they proceeded with their projects and incorporated some of their best ideas in our draft,” said Grover.

Adding to the challenges of the committee’s tasks has been the resignation of one founding member, Dan McLeod, who was unable to remain on the committee due to scheduling conflicts.

Grover noted that founding member Cynthia LeBrecque hasn’t attended the past several meetings, and the council agreed to elect two new committee members to replace McLeod and LeBrecque.

At Grover’s recommendation, resident Anita Snow was chosen to replace MacLeod during Monday’s meeting. The other opening has not yet been filled.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Dog Park Study Committee meets the second Tuesday of each month at the town’s Cable Access Center. The next meeting will take place Tuesday, June 12 at 7 p.m. For more information contact Grover at 432-1100, ext. 178.
