Exeter Hospital on Thursday said it has contacted all patients who need to be tested for a Hepatitis C outbreak linked to the hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab and recovery room.

Patients not contacted by the hospital are not part of the recommended testing at this time, Exeter Health Resources spokesman Ryan Lawrence said.

The hospital contacted all patients identified as being treated at the cardiac catheterization lab between April 1, 2011, and May 25, who meet the testing criteria, Lawrence said.

The hospital notified impacted patients by phone and has mailed letters. Patients who received a notification from the hospital that have not yet scheduled an appointment should call 580-6124.

To date, state Department of Public Health workers confirmed 10 patients are infected with the same strain of Hepatitis C. One of the 10 is an employee of the hospital.

The state last week announced four cases recently tested positive for the same strain of the potentially deadly virus that attacks the liver. The state expanded the number of former patients it will test after six more confirmed cases were announced this week.

Meanwhile, the state is trying to determine the source and cause of the infection.
