UNH's chief fundraiser resigns $300k post
DURHAM —The University of New Hampshire's chief fundraiser is leaving his $300,000-a-year position to take a similar job in Maryland.
Peter Weiler, vice president for advancement and president of the UNH Foundation, will leave UNH later this summer to become the new vice president for university relations and president of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation beginning Aug. 22.
Weiler was the second highest-paid employee in the university system and came to UNH in fall 2010; he was in charge of fundraising, alumni relations, marketing and communications activities.
The university said he was instrumental in building the infrastructure and systems needed for the institution to succeed in alumni engagement and fundraising.
“While it was difficult to make the decision to leave New England and UNH, this is an incredible professional opportunity for us,” Weiler said in a statement.
Weiler will leave UNH “knowing the institution is positioned for success,” he said, adding, “the infrastructure and systems are in place; we have strong campaign leadership; and our alumni are engaged. With President Mark Huddleston's leadership, UNH will soon publicly launch its next capital campaign.”
A search for Weiler's replacement is expected to begin immediately, according to Huddleston, who thanked Weiler for his leadership and expertise.
“Peter has taken us to a new level of alumni engagement and fundraising, and I am confident the staff he has put in place will continue the forward momentum we need,” Huddleston said.
University of Maryland President Wallace Loh said he was thrilled to have Weiler joining the college.
“He's a national leader in university development. His leadership, vision and experience make him a tremendous asset for the University of Maryland,” Loh said in a press release.
Weiler said he's looking forward to his new position.
“An opportunity to work at one of the premier research universities in the country is a true professional honor, and I look forward to working with Maryland's outstanding trustees, alumni, students, faculty and staff,” he said.
