Opportunities abound for summer baseball in NH

The opportunities to play summer baseball at a higher level continue to grow for college players from around New Hampshire.

The Futures Collegiate Baseball League expanded from four to nine teams in its second season and is remaining true to its original mission of stocking its rosters with players from New England.

That’s good news for players from New Hampshire. Upwards of 30 players with Granite State ties will be in the league this summer, with 14 currently on the Nashua Silver Knights roster and eight on the roster for the Seacoast Mavericks of Rochester.

The Silver Knights and Mavericks are two of the original teams, with Nashua having won the inaugural league championship.

The other teams in the league are the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks; North Shore Navigators of Lynn, Mass.; Pittsfield (Mass.) Suns; Wachusett Dirt Dawgs of Leominster, Mass.; Old Orchard Beach (Maine) Raging Tide; and Torrington (Conn.) Titans.

At least 15 players on each team have to be from New England or play for a college in the region. This year, the league decided to allow each team to carry a maximum of two graduated high school seniors. No New Hampshire high schoolers are currently in the league.

Mike Daboul, head of operations for Seacoast, said signing players was easier this year because teams started recruiting in the fall, unlike a year ago when teams started in January because the league came together so late.

“Last year it was a sprint to get ready and start in June,” Daboul said. “Starting in August this year made it easier to go after the top-tier players.”

B.J. Neverett, who takes over for Mike Chambers as Nashua’s new manager, said a year of experience and adding teams in towns where previously there were other college summer-league or even professional minor-league teams helped strengthen the league’s credentials in the eyes of college coaches.

Although most teams extended their recruiting across the country, Neverett and Daboul said they want a strong local presence.

At least six Seacoast players have come up through team owner Dave Hoyt’s USA Training Center in Newington, including Casey Cotter of North Hampton (Merrimack College), Aidan O’Leary of Greenland (Manhattan), Ryan Coppinger of Dover (Canisius) and Cole Tobin of Dover (Nyack).

“The college team was the next step we needed to showcase our players as best we can,” Daboul said.

Nashua has plenty of players who know their way around Holman Stadium, such as Alek Morency (Merrimack), Connor Root (Bentley) and Ryan Gendron (UMass Lowell), all of Nashua; Geoff Fisher (UMass Lowell) of Londonderry; Josh Coughlin (Keene State) of Litchfield; Logan Gillis (Bentley) of Merrimack; and Nick Poore (Boston College) and Alex Treff (Northeastern) of Salem.

“We’re going to take care of as many local kids as we can,” Neverett said. “That won’t change.”
