There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding today's high school sports slate, but one thing is for sure — somebody is going to be busy.

If it rains like it's supposed to, schedule makers will be busy on the phone trying to reschedule events in what is annually one of the busiest days of the year for high school playoffs. And if the rain isn't as bad as expected, a lot of games will be played, meaning athletes and officials will be busy across the state.

After a winter and spring of relatively good weather, the bad might finally catch up to the NHIAA.

“It was too good to be true,” said Pat Corbin, NHIAA executive director. “It was just a matter of time.”

Not only could the weather impact the scheduling, but it could also hit the NHIAA in the wallet. The NHIAA depends on playoff ticket sales as revenue for operating costs, and bad weather would likely keep large crowds from attending the games on the biggest tournament day of the year.

“It's not what we like obviously from our standpoint,” Corbin said.

According to the NHIAA website, all boys' and girls' lacrosse tournament action will be played rain or shine.

Track

There is one championship scheduled for today that will take place rain or shine, and that's the track & field Meet of Champions at Londonderry High School. The meet is set to start at 2:30 p.m.

A couple of athletes to watch out for at the meet are Betsy Garnick of Bishop Guertin of Nashua and Hillary Holmes of Exeter. Garnick set the state record at the Division I Championships last week in the 100-meter hurdles and is the defending MOC champ, while Holmes won three events at the Div. I Championships and is the MOC defending champ in the triple jump.

On the boys' side, Mike Cyphers of Lebanon is the favorite in the pole vault and Jerickson Fedrick of Salem comes in as the Div. I champ in both the 100 and 200 meter sprints.

Lacrosse

There are four sets of semifinals scheduled to be played rain or shine in lacrosse, Division II and Division III for boys, and Division I and Division II for the girls.

The Division II boys' semifinals will be played at Exeter High School with games at 6 and 8 p.m. The first game has second-seeded Bow taking on No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover, and the nightcap has No. 1 Bedford against fourth-seeded Portsmouth.

The Division III boys' semifinals will be at Stellos Stadium in Nashua at 5 and 7 p.m. Second-seeded Plymouth plays No. 3 Hollis/Brookline in the early game, and top-seeded Derryfield of Manchester plays No. 4 Pelham in the late game.

All four games in the girls' semifinals will be held at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester.

The Division II games will be at 2 and 4 p.m. Second-seeded Bishop Guertin takes on No. 3 Portsmouth at 2 p.m., and top-seeded Merrimack plays No. 4 Bedford in the late game.

The Division I games will be at 6 and 8 p.m. Second-seeded Souhegan plays No. 3 Londonderry in the first game and top-seeded Concord takes on No. 4 Exeter in the late match.

On the diamond

All four divisions in both softball and baseball are scheduled to play their quarterfinals today at the home of the higher seed, weather permitting. That is a total of 64 games.

Whether or not those games are played will be determined by the schools involved, not the NHIAA.

One interesting game in the baseball quarterfinals is in Division II, where rivals Goffstown and Bedford square off at St. Anselm College.

The squads split two games in the regular season, with each team winning by 10 runs. The fourth-seeded Grizzlies won the first matchup, 10-0, and then the fifth-seeded Bulldogs got their revenge with a 14-4 victory.

In softball, upstart Windham looks to keep its momentum going in the Division II tournament when it plays at Souhegan. The 16th-seeded Jaguars pulled off a huge upset in the preliminary round when they downed top-seeded Hollis/Brookline, 7-2. The Cavaliers had beaten Windham 18-0 in the regular season. It was a little closer when the eighth-seeded Sabers played the Jaguars in the regular season. They beat Windham, 19-17.

Tennis

The individual tennis tournaments have been postponed until Sunday with the same times and locations, boys at Derryfield and SNHU and girls at Pinkerton of Derry. The doubles tennis tournament has been cancelled and may be rescheduled later.
