Interest high in MST admission
MANCHESTER — A Celtics playoff game. A Saturday night Red Sox game. Springsteen at Fenway.
While all are hot commodities, the most desired tickets this year may be one of 100 that will allow a teenager into the freshmen class of Manchester School of Technology.
“We know they want it. The phones have been ringing off the hook,” said MST Principal Karen R.H. White.
White has heard from parents from outside Manchester, who live in towns that now send upperclassmen to MST. Their children are eligible for the lottery, but most school districts aren't interested in paying the full-scale tuition, she said.
Some parents, both inside and outside Manchester, have offered to write a check for the tuition. “I send them over to the (Manchester schools) business office,” White said.
Applications will be handed out at two orientation sessions for parents, scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Parkside Middle School and 6 p.m. Wednesday at Southside Middle School.
They are also available at the MST website, mstnh.org. Applications are due June 15. The drawing will be held either that day or the following Monday. White said she will mail letters immediately and telephone the parents of students who are selected.
She said an additional drawing will have to take place for students who will be wait-listed.
To qualify, a student must have graduated eighth grade and be a freshman for the coming school year.
White said she expects interest to be high. After a January open house, 50 parents put their names on a list, and she's heard from school counselors who said they have 20 or so students interested.
MST is planning for 125 students in the 2013-14 school year.
