Summer vacation? Not for school maintenance staff

DERRY — The school maintenance staff will be busy this summer making sure several of the district’s schools are looking their best.

“Most of the projects this summer will include touch-ups, rooms being painted and flooring repairs, and they will be done by our staff,” said school Business Director Jane Simard. “We’re going to get the most out of our staff this summer.”

Carpets in areas of several of the schools will be replaced by tile flooring, she said.

“The tile floors are easier on maintenance and last forever,” Simard said. She said the staff will also be changing several rooms over for new uses.

School Board members Ken Linehan and Neal Ochs, who are members of the board’s facilities committee, recently toured several schools and said they are in excellent shape with the exception of the need for some touch-ups and a coat of paint.

Ochs said he and Linehan did talk to some of the district principals about the possibility of parking lot repaving projects at the schools.

Simard said she has begun looking at pricing for some of the projects, and any repaving would be paid for through the district’s capital reserve balance.

The biggest project over the summer will take place at West Running Brook Middle School, where contractors are scheduled to begin replacing the gym floor after the school year ends on Monday, June 18.

Earlier this year, the School Board approved a plan to go ahead with a new gym floor at a cost of $130,000. Nearly $85,000 of the cost will be covered by the school district’s insurance policy.

The floor was damaged when a hot-water pipe burst.

After reviewing the situation with the district’s insurance companies and soliciting quotes for the repair, Simard brought two options forward to the School Board, one to repair the section of the floor that was damaged and a second to replace the floor outright with a more modern version.

Based on the appraisal from the insurance company, the school district is eligible for $84,600 for the replacement of the damaged portion of the floor and the renovation of the remainder of the floor. The cost of replacing the floor outright is about an additional $50,000, and Simard said that money from the current year’s maintenance budget could be used to cover that cost.

“During the repairs, the school cafeteria will be filled with the bleachers,” Simard said. “It’s going to be a good summer to get some work done.”
