It was an historic day for Profile High School of Bethlehem on Wednesday, as both the girls’ and boys’ tennis teams won Division III titles with 5-4 wins over Bow at Pinkerton Academy of Derry.

It was the first title ever for the second-seeded boys’ squad, who knocked off the top-seeded Falcons, and the first since 2005 for the No. 1 girls, who beat third-seeded Bow.

The boys’ match came down to second doubles, where the team of Taylor Boucher and Ian Boulton battled to take an 8-7 lead and then squared off through five deuces with their opponents before finally getting the winner.

The Patriots (14-1) led 4-2 after the singles portion of the match, but then dropped first and third doubles and the Falcons (15-1) tied things up 4-4. It all came down to the back-and-forth match at second doubles, where Boucher and Boulton prevailed.

The match started on Tuesday, but was postponed due to thunder in the area with the singles portion tied 2-2. It resumed on Wednesday, and the Patriots won the last two singles matches to claim a 4-2 advantage going into doubles play. Taylor Boucher won 9-8 (7-0) at second singles on Wednesday and Jake Kelly won 9-7 at No. 3.

The Profile girls also trailed at one point in the doubles portion of the match. The Falcons (14-3) won at first doubles to go up 4-3 in the team scoring.

Then the Patriots (15-1) won at both second and third doubles to claim the title. The team of Isabelle Eyman and Anna Bolton won 8-6 at second doubles to tie it up 4-4, and then the team of Rebekah Palmer and Kate Hesler prevailed 8-0 at third doubles to give Profile the crown.

St. Thomas 5, Hanover 4: It came down to the final match on the court, and in the end the St. Thomas Aquinas second doubles team of Michelle Trainor and Maggie Holland rallied from a two-point deficit to give the second-seeded Saints girls tennis team a 5-4 win over top-seeded Hanover in the Div. II championship at the Derryfield School in Manchester.

Trainor and Holland trailed 7-5 at one point, but ended up winning the match 9-7 to give St. Thomas of Dover the title.

The two squads split the singles portion of the match 3-3. The Saints (16-1) won at first, second and fourth singles, while the Marauders (15-1) took third, fifth and sixth singles.

Then the team of Anna Hayes and Julia Keenan won for the Saints at first doubles and the tandem of Liza Goss and Zoe Yu prevailed for Hanover at third doubles, setting up the drama at second doubles.

That’s where Holland and Trainor were able to keep their composure and come back to win four of the last six points for the victory.
