BB gun vandals causing thousands in damages
PELHAM — Police are looking for vandals who used BB guns to cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage in Pelham and Hudson.
Vandalism reports continue to come in, according to Sgt. Michael Pickles of the Pelham police.
“We have reports of several houses and windows as well as at least 20 to 25 cars,” Pickles said.
The vandals are targeting windows, Pickles said, but also doing significant damage to siding and car bodies. The department has no leads at this time and damage is not contained to any specific area.
“It’s pretty much town-wide,” Pickles said.
The vandalism seems to have started Friday, Pickles said, and peaked in Pelham on Sunday and Monday. Pine Valley Golf Course was hit on Saturday and Sunday nights, he said.
Ten cars were vandalized at Ole Rock Motors on Route 38 in Pelham. Owner Craig Fields said his son, also named Craig, discovered the damage on Sunday morning.
“He saw a window blown out and walked down the line,” Fields said.
Many cars in the front row had broken windshields, as well as side window and body damage, Fields said. He estimated that the glass alone cost about $2,600, with total damage around $6,000.
What was supposed to be a relaxing weekend at the beach for the older Fields was ruined by a call reporting that three cars were damaged, followed 20 minutes later by a call updating the damage to five, then nine, he said.
“He called the last time and it was 10,” Fields said.
The business has been around for 35 years and hasn’t had problems with vandalism beyond siphoned gas until six weeks ago. At that time, two large rocks were thrown at windshields causing about $5,000 worth of damage, Fields said.
The acts were senseless, Fields said, and he hopes the vandals are caught quickly. The car lot has security cameras and his son is reviewing the tapes looking for clues, Fields said. The police have also taken an interest in the tapes.
“I’m hoping he finds something,” Fields said.
The first incident in Hudson occurred on May 21, according to Capt. Bill Avery. Since that time about $4,500 in damage to cars and houses has been reported. A large window damaged on May 24 cost about $2,000, he said.
“Some people had multiple cars damaged,” Avery said.
Aside from the monetary loss, Avery is concerned that someone could be injured by a BB shot into their house. Like the Pelham police, they have no leads at this time and are asking residents to report any suspicious activity to their detective division.
